About The Institute

The institute originally started in the year 1958 as Regional Family Planning Training Centre. In the year 1975, the institute was upgraded as Health & Family Welfare Training Centre. In the year 1991, it was upgraded as "State Institute of Health & Family Welfare” (SIHFW). It became an apex training institute of Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat. The new building was constructed near Sola Civil Hospital Sola, Gandhinagar - Sarkhej Highway, during ‘Indian Population Plan –VII’ funded by World Bank which was inaugurated in August 1998 by Honorable Home Minister of India Shri L.K. Advani. SIHFW shifted from its Sola building to civil hospital Gandhinagar on February 2010, as the building was given to the Medical College, Sola, Ahmedabad. In March 2011, SIHFW again shifted from Civil hospital Gandhinagar to Khadi Gramodyog talim Kendra, sector-12, Gandhinagar. At present is situated at NHM Bhavan, Civil Hospital Campus, Gandhinagar Since November 2015.

The institute provides Trainings for Trainers, teaching-learning material, curricula and modules, provides basic foundation and promotional courses and induction training to fresh medical officers, Professional Development Course for District Health Managers, workout guidelines etc. As an apex institute planning, implementation and monitoring of all types of training programmes is being looked after by SIHFW.

SIHFW has been recognized as one of the Nodal & Collaborating Training Institute (CTI) for planning & implementation of RCH training Programmes. The institute provides an umbrella support to,

  • Regional Public Health (Nurse) Training Institute - 1
  • Female Health Supervisor Training Schools - 2
  • Female Health Worker Training Schools (Govt.) - 29

It also works as a link between NIHFW, New Delhi and the State and in turn to HFWTC, Dnl.T.Cs DTTs, RPHTI, FHSTSs and FHWTSs for organizing training programmes.

Details Of Training Centers And Training Schools- Trainings Under Sihfw

SIHFW, Gandhinagar is an apex training institute for state and approved training center by NIHFW, New Delhi. SIHFW functions through its subordinate 20 district training centers almost in all districts and through 5 regional training centers for each region. SIHFW also controls ANM/FHW basic training centers. SIHFW under direct guidance and supervision of MOHFW Delhi & NIHFW Delhi organizes TOTs for all approved National Health Programmes and then all trainings through its training centers are conducted at district level for all health functionaries. SIHFW acts as a nodal training institute for State of Gujarat for various trainings suggested by GOI and NIHFW, from state to district level. It conducts trainings to build capacity of health cadre to function efficiently and effectively.
